Mtb training plans

Hello all. Is the development of some more training plans specific to mtb in view?

@Bruno - just to double check - you have the two in the training plans section already probably. I’m a MTB’er as well - what are you thinking in terms of different focus?
(For what it’s worth, I sometimes use the Volcano and Mountainous Road plans as well as alternatives - just in case that helps)

Building Block training plans

For the ultimate flexibility of course, we’ve now got these, where if we decide that one aspect of this is more related to our own style of MTB’ing (whether we’re uplift only, downhillers, through to XC leisure riding) we could focus maybe on different things - does mean us working it out ourselves in blocks

Or there’s a custom plan option as well where one of the coaches will design something around our needs - I used that last year for a bit

Seems to me the MTB category is very broad, putting dirt crits, short courses, XC, enduro, ultra endurance (8hr, 24hr) and DH all under the same plan is pretty limiting.
I was also wondering if we could expect to see specific videos for MTB and particularly CX racing, that would be very motivating.

I think probably the key feature of more MTB plans will not be different physiological focus, most likely–after all, an aerobic engine is an aerobic engine, and from a pure motor perspective a lot of the things that make you strong on the road will make you strong offroad too. Just maybe a bit more of a short-power focus.

What would be very helpful to add to the MTB plans would be, rather, guidance for taking it outside.

E.g., “do this video indoors if you have to, but if you can, go outside, find a trail that you can hammer but that also has some semi-technical features that will take you approximately X minutes to complete, rest for Y minutes, use RPE rather than power, don’t worry if TSS is higher or lower afterwards as long as you hit the RPE targets.”

The challenge of going hard in MTB is everything else going on. It’s like doing max aerobic or anaerobic intervals but where you also have a bunny hop in the middle or a manual to get up a ledge or a hard off-camber turn or a part that’s so steep that cadence drops to 50 rpm. Where your heart rate hits 185 up the climb and only drops to 182 on the way down.

Additional videos would be cool, but they’re not gonna be teh difference maker IMO.

I think I added it in the SUF Beta group as a feature request, but an XCO/Short track plan would be rather useful to me. I also like the idea of more outdoof stuff, but there aren’t many short loops near me so I might not be able to make much regular use of that. Still, I’d fit it inoccasionally if it was an option! I’d also like to see more MTB videos. I’ve trawled YouTube and found some POV race stuff which is cool, and during the season I’ll watch UCI races too.

I love watching the MTB videos when training. The only downside is I tend to start riding according to what I’m seeing on screen. So, if the riders are going over technical ground like a rock garden, or some drops, I find myself wanting to stop pedalling and stand up.
That said, watching Nino Schurter power up the switchbacks, or Paul van der Ploeg and others smash it in XCC certainly gets the legs powering.
The Women’s XC world champs from a few years back was an amazing race. I can’t remember the riders, but there was one rider who was clearly a better technical rider, and one seemed to have more power on the straight. They kept swapping places as the second rider always took the B line on a rock garden, but then passed the first rider later on. On the final lap the less technical rider took the A line to try and stop the other rider getting ahead, but the other rider hit the B line so fast that she got away. Anywho, if anyone can remind me what year that was, I would love to watch it again. :slight_smile: Or we Suff could put it in the next video…

Jolanda Neff @ La Bresse in 2018. One of the all time greatest races ever. It had it all - the mental strength on show and maximum commitment / effort were amazing to see. You can find it on youtube or the Red Bull app.

From your description you may be referring to the race two weeks later. Kate Courtney took the world championships by overtaking Annaka Langvad on a technical, off camber, root filled section.
